I've read many times that it costs the providers big bucks to take the system down by means of an ECM.. I've heard millions... I can't really see why... It seems pretty simple to me chance a section of code, send it out, presto... And why spend millions.. If that is the case.. A couple of days of downtime can't possibly save them millions? Just wondering.

With the latest changes.. ECM's now cost Dish/Bev a fraction of the price they used too... =/

This is what I've come to imagine... Shame... What can be done? Can they release updated bins to combat this. As when they released the first Autoroll or AutoTP? BTW what's the longest downtime anyone has seen to date?

xaero. it costs millions because every line of code that you write can be rated somewhere between $400-$1000/line... and if you have tons of programmers changing the existing code to better encrypt things, the manpower costs are a lot.. so that's why it costs them millions... how they can ever recover that capital, it still is a mystery to me... haha

I work as an encryption programmer, seems to me the changes of late, aren't as complicated as they used to be we're not rewriting sections of code, we're simply changing numbers... A secretary could do it for 10$/h... I'm hoping the coders will find a way to basically catch these things and update on the fly, as with autoroll...

Nothing, you need to wait for a new file to be released.
Noone knows when it will be released, it could be in 12 hours it could be in 1 week.

The ECM of 2006
2 weeks after I bought my first FTA, Charlie and Bev both went down and was down for almost 3 months. It was reported as the worst ECM as far as I know. Things were starting to look bad for our hobby. But our noble coders saved the day as always. I have nothing but the highest respect for for all coders to keeping our hobby alive.

location does not matter, you guys are not very wise. satellite communication is one way, as long as our satellites are pointed at the source and get good signal, it does not matter where we are.
